Borrowing guide

How to choose the best loan in Ethiopia.

01

Compare the minimum rate, not the maximum

Banks quote a rate range. The minimum rate applies to their best customers — strong credit history, high income, good collateral. Always ask which rate you personally qualify for.

02

Factor in the total cost, not just the rate

Processing fees, insurance requirements and collateral valuation costs add to the effective cost of a loan. A bank with a 13% rate and ETB 5,000 in fees may cost more than a 13.5% rate with no fees.

03

Collateral requirements vary significantly

Most Ethiopian banks require collateral for personal loans above ETB 50,000. CBE accepts vehicle logbooks and land title deeds. Some private banks offer unsecured personal loans at higher rates.

Data integrity

Every rate has a verified date. Always.

Loan rates are sourced from official bank websites and verified weekly. Any rate older than 7 days is flagged automatically.
